This will help SOME of you please read the caveat at the bottom of this entry to look at a Craigslist photo and figure out if it’s the model you’re looking for or not. Archaeologists have discovered bone needles with eyes, used to sew together skins and furs, dating back to this time. The earliest known sewing needles made of iron come from the Celtic hill fort at Manching, Germany, and date to the third century BC. The tomb of a minor official of the Han Dynasty BC-AD has been reported by Chinese archaeologists as containing a sewing set complete with thimble.

This would be the oldest known example of a thimble, which originated as a device to help push crude needles through resistant materials such as animal skins. It was over years later in , that the first workable sewing machine was invented and patented by the British inventor Thomas Saint. Earlier, in , Karl Weisenthal, a German inventor, devised the first sewing macine needle, but did not produce a complete machine. Saint’s machine, which was designed to sew leather and canvas, mainly on boots, used only a single thread and formed a chain stitch.

Instead of a needle, an awl was employed to pierce a hole through the material being sewed.

Though it’s not always the first conclusion we jump to, the problem is often in the thread! If you take your spool of thread and unwind about inches, does it curl like an old-style phone cord? When monofilament and nylon threads start to get old or are low quality, it can start to flatten out and curl, causing it to slip out of the take-up lever or the tension or loop on the bottom. Remember, it’s not how long you’ve had the thread but how long it’s been on the spool since it left the manufacturer.

There are a few things you can do to avoid these issues with monofilament or nylon threads. When you purchase a new spool of thread, purchase from a good name brand. Buying in smaller spool sizes also works better because there is less thread on the spool. You can also use a thread lubricant on thread you currently have to help it glide through properly. Applying it down the side of the whole spool will lubricate all of the thread on the spool so you can use the whole thing with no worries.

Thread lubricant is also a miracle cure for metallic threads, especially when embroidering. You may also find better results or less issues with crosswound thread rather than horizontal thread since it is designed to come off the end of the spool rather than the side. And lastly, standing your spool up rather than laying it down can help combat this issue if you’re using a horizontal wound thread.

I can imagine that only those interested in sewing, crafts and perhaps machinery would find this small but very informative museum of interest. But that is not necessarily so and I know many people have paid this small museum a visit and found it to be both interesting and a pleasure. Singer ‘New Family’ (12,12K) Sewing Machines. It seems difficult to imagine now, but the Singer ‘New Family’ sewing machine first appeared in at the end of the America Civil War and and at the time the West was still being won.

The big issue is that these machines were made to use the x13 needle. While it is available mail order there are only sizes 12 and 14 available. The x13 needle has the same timing length as the popular 15×1 but is slightly shorter overall. Careful examination and testing showed my machine was running a 15×1 needle when I bought it and that it works properly in all respects. This includes sewing full width pattern stitches on an 8 layer stack of 10 canvas.

There are two routes: Adjust Needlebar, hook and feed dog timing. I found no references which recommended this option and only warnings of poor performance. Increasing the needle clearance to the bobbin case by increasing the depth of the “half moon” cutout on the bobbin case. This is easily accomplished with a Dremel type tool with a grinding stone bit. There are a number of anecdotal reports of the success even to the extent of using industrial dbx1 needles same dimension as the 15×1 with a round shank.

Bobbin modification is not original to me, but I hope to document it a bit better. I confirmed by direct observation that my vintage bobbin case was probably modified and that modern replacement bobbin cases do not provide the needed needle clearance for the 15×1.
